von Boeckmann-Keeble House • 4410 Avenue H

The von Boeckmann--Keeble House is an exceptional turn-of-the-century residence, even in the context of the Hyde Park Historic District. With fine transitional detailing and plan, the house is one of the few early houses in the district designed by a major architect, Leo M. J. Diehlmann of San Antonio. Modeled on a Seguin, Texas mansion, it was built for cotton ginner Edgar von Boeckmann and his wife, Clementine. The house was completed in 1910 and occupied a full block.
The essential design integrity of the house survived intact under subsequent owners, although porch infill, vinyl siding and false columns detracted from its historic character. The current owners, Judge Robert Pitman and Mr. David Smith, have implemented a full restoration with architect Jay Farrell. The property was recently designated a City of Austin Historic Landmark and was recognized by the Heritage Society of Austin with a Restoration Award. The 2006 Homes Tour marks the first time it has been opened to the public in many years.
