Hyde Park - A Shady Sanctuary
Begin the 2007 Hyde Park Homes Tour by exploring the magnificent Austin State Hospital Administration Building, which celebrates its 150th anniversary this year. Architecture and historic displays combine to make this a memorable visual experience.
From there, stroll or ride down Hyde Park’s tree-lined streets and avenues as you view houses dating from the Victorian Era through the 1920s. A beautifully restored Victorian, a small but historically significant early 20th century house in the process of restoration, and a bungalow artistically refurbished in an Oriental-inspired style are several of the structures you will encounter.
A special feature of the tour is the opportunity to view the house recently featured on the PBS program This Old House. This expanded and restored 1927 bungalow earned a 5-star rating from Austin’s Green Building program.
After the tour, return to the Austin State Hospital grounds to enjoy a neighborhood fair, with free music and craft booths, under a canopy of trees. This year’s Hyde Park Homes Tour will provide a relaxing and enjoyable encounter with the architecture, history, and urban forest that shape the Hyde Park experience.
